Working in association with
Beyond Entertainment, Carnival developed key art creative directions and finishing for Carl Barron’s first feature film,
Manny Lewis.
The film is an introspective rumination on life, very much in the laconic and dry style that Carl is known for. With this in mind, we sought to create a poster which reflects his relaxed demeanour and expands audience expectations beyond his known stand-up routines to something more meditative – in a similar vein as other comedians who have taken on drama-comedies (such as Will Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction).
Barron said the film was semi-autobiographical:
“I wanted to do a story about my life on the road for the past 20 years and show people the other side of stand-up comedy, the side without all the laughter and all the isolation of being a comedian. It is also a bit of a love story and about trying to connect to someone. When you are performing you connect to thousands, but do you ever really connect to one?… Manny Lewis is just a well-known comic who… has trouble holding down a relationship. Everyone has trouble trying to connect to people. There is a bit of me in there, how much of me I will leave up to the audience to decide.” The Daily Telegraph
The creative development process involved the ideation concept directions including sketches, art directing of two photoshoots, image compositing, layout design, retouching and colour grading. The title design was also created by Carnival in 3D, with an animated version also created for use in advertising.
