Carnival were engaged to design key art for Bella & Bernie, a short film which was produced and shot in Chicago by ex-pat Australian actor/director Rebecca McNamee Croft, and features rising-star Teagan Croft (DC’s Titans and The Osiris Child).
Synopsis: Two 16 year old carefree confidantes, Bella and Bernie, tentatively explore independence and sexuality while trying to dodge the ever watchful eye of Mrs. Judge, Bella’s mother. The evangelical Mrs. Judge has concerns over Bella’s friendship with the vibrant Bernie, wary of Bernie’s secret family history repeating itself in Bella. As Bella learns more about Bernie, and herself, she will realize that choice is fickle, sometimes coming down to those who make the choice and those who must live with the consequences.
Our creative direction focused upon the clashing of cultures (rebellious teen girls growing up in a conservative environment) and included digital imaging to include a spliff and smoke rings, as well as recomposing the images to appear head-to-head. The title treatment design includes a subtle nod to their catholic upbringing in the form of a cross ampersand.
