The Convert tells the story of preacher Thomas Munro at a British settlement caught in a bloody war between Maori tribes in 1830s New Zealand. Directed by Lee Tamahori (Once Were Warriors) and produced by one of New Zealand’s most experienced and respected producers Robin Scholes (Once Were Warriors, Mahana), Te Kohe Tuhaka, Andrew Mason (The Water Diviner) and Troy Lum (Boy Swallows Universe).
Carnival was engaged to develop a new piece of key art that spoke to an arthouse, a female-skewed audience that heroes the female protagonist as a proud Maori woman and a force to be reckoned with. International marketing has focused on the tribal conflicts, and combined with the filmmaker’s pedigree (Once Were Warriors), the tone was masculine and potentially less appealing to an arthouse audience.
Both International and new key art will be employed throughout the campaign, talking to different audiences.
